How Many Anonymous Messages Does a Link Really Get? Our Data

Most links on our site got nothing: 64.7% of 3,434 links received no messages, while a small group of links got most of the messages, mostly in the first 24 hours.

If you are wondering whether posting an anonymous message link will actually bring in messages, here is the plain answer from our own data: most of our links got nothing. Of the 3,434 links in our snapshot, 64.7% never received a single message. A small group of links collected most of the messages. When messages did arrive, the first one often came within minutes, though that first message can also be the owner testing their own link. Overall, 75.4% of all messages arrived within 24 hours of the link being created.

This article walks through those numbers. Then it turns them into practical advice on where to post your link, when to post it, what to write, and what to expect once messages start coming in.

Most links stay quiet

On our site, each link opens a board. A board is a private inbox where your messages land. We looked at every board created between 2026-04-30 and 2026-10-11 that still exists. That came to 3,434 boards holding 9,847 stored messages.

The biggest group by far is boards that never got anything: 2,221 of 3,434, or 64.7%. Only 35.3% received at least one message.

That can sound discouraging, but it is useful to know. A quiet inbox is the normal result. It does not mean something is broken, and on its own it does not tell you much, because we cannot see whether a link was shared. Some people may create a link and never post it, so we cannot say how many of the quiet boards were actually put in front of anyone.

A small group gets most of the messages

Here is how the boards break down by the number of messages they received:

Messages receivedShare of boards
064.7%
113.7%
2-411.2%
5-94.5%
10-243.4%
25+2.6%

The bottom rows of the table are where most of the activity is. The 90 boards with 25 or more messages make up just 2.6% of all boards, but they hold 58.2% of all stored messages. If you widen the view a little, boards with 10 or more messages are 6.0% of boards and hold 74.8% of messages.

So when you see someone with a full inbox, you are looking at the unusual case, not the typical one. One possible reason is that those owners posted their link somewhere with a larger or more active audience. Our numbers do not include audience size, though, so treat that as a guess.

Most messages arrive within a day

Among boards that got at least one message, here is how long it took from creating the link to the first message:

  • Under 10 minutes: 68.2%
  • 10-59 minutes: 16.7%
  • 1-6 hours: 7.4%
  • 6-24 hours: 4.1%
  • More than 24 hours: 3.5%

One honest caveat: the first message can also be the owner testing their own link. That may account for some of the very fast first messages.

Looking at all messages, not just the first ones, the timing is still front-loaded. Of all stored messages, 75.4% arrived within 24 hours of the board being created. In practice, most of the activity we see happens while a link is fresh.

Messages were also spread unevenly across the week. Saturday was the busiest day, with 18.3% of messages. Wednesday was the quietest, with 10.8%. These days are counted in UTC, so your local day may be slightly shifted.

What the messages actually look like

Do not expect long letters. The median message is 37 characters, about the length of a quick compliment or a single question. The average is 68.7 characters, because some longer messages pull it up.

  • 1-20 characters: 29.6%
  • 21-50 characters: 31.6%
  • 51-100 characters: 21.4%
  • 101-200 characters: 10.0%
  • 201-500 characters: 7.3%

The limit is 500 characters, and messages over 200 characters are uncommon (7.3%). Most messages are short and quick to read. A message can also be turned into a Story image if you want to share your reply.

How safety works in practice

Anonymous messages can go wrong, so it helps to know what the site actually does:

  • Filtered folder: messages that look like they contain personal data or match severe-content patterns go to a separate Filtered folder instead of your main inbox.
  • Blocked outright: sexual content involving minors is blocked and never stored.
  • Block: you can block a sender. This works by their network connection.
  • Mute keywords: you can mute words you do not want to see.
  • Report and delete: you can report a message, delete it, or delete your whole board.

In our data, the automatic checks sent 46 (0.5%) stored messages to the Filtered folder. Blocked messages are never stored, so they are not part of that count. Board owners reported 29 messages.

Please keep in mind that pattern matching misses things. It is a safety net, not a guarantee. You can read more on our safety page.

How to use this when you make your own link

Based on the numbers above, here is what we would suggest:

  1. Pick your moment. Most messages arrive within a day of the link being created, so create it when you are ready to share it, ideally when your followers are active, and check your inbox in the hours after.
  2. Put it where people can tap it. Add it to your Instagram Links field or your TikTok Website field. Then post a Story that points people to it. Our step-by-step guide to how it works shows the setup.
  3. Give people something to answer. Of the 3,434 boards, 50 had a bio text, and 34 (68.0%) of those received at least one message, compared with 34.8% of boards without a bio. That is a small group, and it shows an association, not proof that a bio causes messages. Still, a short prompt costs nothing. For ideas, see our Instagram Story prompts for anonymous Q&A.
  4. Expect short replies. With a median of 37 characters, a simple question in your prompt may suit people better than asking for long answers.
  5. Set up your safety tools first. Mute any keywords you already know you do not want to see before you share the link.
  6. Keep your expectations realistic. Getting no messages is the most common result, so try not to read too much into a quiet inbox.

If you want to try it, you can create your own anonymous message link. Type a name and you get a link plus a recovery PIN. There is no email, no password, and nothing to download.

About these numbers

These figures cover boards (links) created on the site between 2026-04-30 and 2026-10-11 that still exist. The snapshot was taken on 2026-10-11 10:33:05 UTC and includes 3,434 boards and 9,847 stored messages. Deleted boards and deleted messages are not counted, so the real totals may have been higher.

We did not read message text, names, or IP addresses. We counted only how many messages there were, when they arrived, and how long they were. Timing is measured from when a link was created, not from when it was shared. Weekdays are in UTC. The first message on a board can be the owner testing their own link. The bio comparison is based on just 50 boards and shows an association, not a cause. We also cannot see whether or where a link was shared, so these numbers describe what happened, not why.
